A rare war-date partly-printed and illustrated lithograph document being a Maryland loyal contribution certificate, 1p. oblong 4to., Baltimore, [Maryland], Jan. 8, 1862 issued to raise funds to honor existing Governor Thomas H. Hicks for his efforts to keep Maryland in the Union. A portrait of Hicks centers the document while a pair of clasped hands and Lady Liberty with an American flag and shield appear in opposite corners. Printed by A. Hoen, Co., Baltimore the text reads, in part: "Thomas H. Hicks, Governor of Maryland from 1858 to 1862…received from Henry C. Stump five dollars as a Contribution to the Testimonial to be presented to Thomas Holliday Hicks…in recognition of a loyal people's gratitude for the patriotic firmness with which during his administration he successfully resisted every effort to seduce…the State of Maryland from its allegiance to the Constitution of the United States…". Signed and made official by treasurer, in printed, by Fred Vickey, Jr. Ironically, Hicks was a pro-slavery Know Nothing governor who helped cut off further Union troops from reaching Baltimore following that city's most infamous riot up to April 1861. He then wrote President Lincoln advising him to broker a peace with the Southern states. Quickly, though, he reversed these subversive policies and took action which convinced his constituency that he had helped Maryland from following her "Southern brethren" into the Confederacy. Not examined out of its matting, with minor archival tape bleed through at the upper corners, else VG.
