War-date Northern letter of recommendation, 1p. 8vo., written by WILLIAM H. TALCOTT (1809-1868) chief engineer of the Morris Canal and a member of New York Harbor's board of engineers during the Civil War. He and his board were appointed by the governor of New York to help defend the harbor from maritime attack, Jersey City, N. J., July 8, 1863 addressed to Gov. Seymour of New York, reading, in part: "I am informed that Mr. Henry H. Trenor who is now Orderly Sergt. of Co. E. [1st] N. Y. Vol. Engn. Corps is going to apply for a commission in one of the new Regts. from New York state. I know Mr. Trenor and cheerfully recommend him to your favorable action, believing him to be a gentleman of good moral character & a true soldier-qualified to bear a commission with credit to himself & honorable to the state…W. H. Talcott." With integral concurrence letter, 1p. 8vo., "J. V. P. Grander, Utica, N. Y., July 10, 1863, to "His Excellency Horatio Seymour", in part: "I should be exceedingly gratified if you can…comply with the wishes of W. H. Talcott…I cheerfully concur in all Mr. Talcott says in regard to him…". Both light toning, else VG
