Good war-date Union Colonel's letter, 1p. 8vo., written, on "Head Quarters, Provost Marshal's Office, 3d Congressional District, Brooklyn," by DAVID ELMORE GREGORY (1836-1893) as "late Col. 144th N. Y. Vols.", addressed to Capt. Butler Fitch, 8th New York Ind. Battery, in part: "The bearer David W. Houghton [he was enlisted in the 8th Artillery on December 8, 1863] is personally known to me and desiring to enter a good battery I recommended yours and he has enlisted for it. Anything you can do for him in the way of promotion (he has been an officer in an Ohio Arty. Regt.) will be duly appreciated…D. E. Gregory, late Col. 144th N. Y. Vols." Gregory was wounded in action and captured during the battle of White Oak Swamp, Virginia on June 30, 1862. He was paroled on June 30, 1862.
