A good war-date Union artilleryman's battle letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Henry D. Isbell, Battery A, 1st Ohio Light Artillery [MWIA Chickamauga, Ga., 9/19/64; DOW 10/16/64 buried in Chattanooga National Cemetery], Camp Sill, [Murfreesboro, Tenn.], Feb. 15, 1863, in part: "…we received a letter from one of the boys…saying that they were all well and in camp in Maryland…they had hard times as well as we. Father wants to know why I don't bragged some and talks as if I was a coward. Every gun had left the park before we had started. Our caissons…then we stopped out in the open field…[I] was going to hitch our horse on but we could not for they [Rebels] were within six rods of us…we could not hold our horse. After my horse was shot I went to the gun, but it was gone up for most of the horses were shot…there was no one there but Lieut. C [Charles S.Cotter]…L[ucias L.] Coe [and] John Whitney and one other cannoneer….then I went with Lieut. C. to Dick Rogers brass guns and we went to working it as fast as we could, but the horse got shot and the limber knocked to pieces…we had to leave it…if we have another fight…I shall try to stick to my party as long as there is anything left of the old battery. I hope if they get any of us next time they will get all of us and make a clean thing of it. I have given up even getting my things that you sent…I don't think they will get to the battery before their time of enlistment is out. If they stop in Camp Chase long they will all make a brake for home and that will be the last of them. I should like to see Marion Isbell. I would let him know what I think of him in a short time. I would like to shoot him first rate…Henry." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. Minor spotting, else VG
