A good war-date Union artilleryman's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Henry D. Isbell, Battery A, 1st Ohio Light Artillery [MWIA Chickamauga, Ga., 9/19/64; DOW 10/16/64 buried in Chattanooga National Cemetery], Camp Drake, [Murfreesboro, Tenn.], May 8, 1863, in part: "…Henry has gone over to town with the wagons after beef. We draw fresh beef once a week and that is often enough in hot weather. I have no place to keep it away from the flies. The battery is divided up into two messes…we have three nigger cooks to a mess. We don't get near as much to eat as we did when we messed by detachments, but we had orders from Gen. Rosecrans to mess in this way and we shall have to do so…we have 64 men in our half (on mess)…where there is so many some…get all there is…but I am large enough to get my share…there is some hard fighting going on at Fredericksburg…I hope our men will take Richmond this time, but I presume we shall hear today that they are all in Washington and the Rebs after them…the sugar was good, but the cake and pies were all spoiled…I will try and keep it away from the rebus…have you seen Maj. Cotter…he is in Ohio…we have gay times playing ball here when it is pleasant weather. We are at it fro morning till night…H. D. Isbell. The original stamped transmittal cover is included. Minor spotting, else VG.
