A good war-date Union artilleryman's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Henry D. Isbell, Battery A, 1st Ohio Light Artillery [MWIA Chickamauga, Ga., 9/19/64; DOW 10/16/64 buried in Chattanooga National Cemetery], "In camp at the foot of Lookout Mountain, [Tenn.], Sept. 6, [1863], in part: "…we are all…in camp about twenty five miles from Stevenson at the foot of the mountains…Henry came back to the battery…but we took him back to Stevenson the next morning. He looked very hard and was not…as well as…when he left us first at Tullahoma. I knew when I…saw him that he had done wrong…and that he would be the worse for it and he was the very next morning. The Hos. was about four miles from camp but I went to Cap. and got a pass and went with him. He stood the ride first rate and we got him into a very good place. I wrote a line to the Hos. at Tullahoma saying where he was so if his father come there he will know where to find him…I was glad to hear that you are coming down here this fall to see us…do as you like about getting me some boots. I find that this is no place for light boots. I like to march in them but they don't last any length of time. If you bring me any boots bring me a heavy pair and have some plates on the heels and some good leather on the tops and have them high. I should like…a good knife…I don't like a knife, fork and spoon together…one thing more…that is a haversack. The government furnishes us with a little small white cloth haversack that is good for nothing. If it rains everything gets wet in it …we are over Sand Mountain and at the foot of Lookout Mountain. It was tenth miles from foot to foot of Sand Mountain and…Lookout is about the same. There is about 20,000 cavalry ahead of us and one division of infantry…we are going to Rome, Ga…Henry Isbell. The original transmittal cover is included. Light soiling, else VG
