War-date Union soldier’s Autograph Letter Signed by John Snyder, Co. E, 78th Pennsylvania Infantry, 4pp. octavo, Murfreesboro, Tennessee, January 23, 1863, and reads in part: “...we was in a might hard battle at Stone’s River within 3 miles of Murfreesboro. We was fighting for nine days as hard as we could fight on the tenth day we went into Murfreesboro...I supposed you will hear of our great charge that we made. We charged and took a battery from the Rebels and when we took it, we turned on them and gave them hell with it. We gave them a darn good whipping but we had to fight for it. We took the colors from the 4th Florida Regiment. We shot 5 color bearers before they gave it up and when we shot the 5th one, they let the flag go and run like the devil and us after them hollering Fort Donelson. When they would chase us they would holler Bulls Run and when we would chase them we would holler Fort Donelson and Shiloh. We drove them might often and whipped them so bad that they run from Murfreesboro like stray sheep...” Fine condition.
