War-date Union sailor’s Autograph Letter Signed by William Mabury, who served in various naval vessels during the war, 4pp. octavo on very rare USS Minnesota imprinted lettersheet, May 24, 1863, and reads in part: “...it will take a day or two or perhaps a week before my discharge...I guess I shall go mackeral fishing...” Fine condition. During the first day of the Battle of Hampton Roads on March 8, 1862, Minnesota ran aground, and the following battle badly damaged her and inflicted many casualties. On the second day of the battle, USS Monitor engaged CSS Virginia, allowing tugs to free Minnesota on the morning of March 10. Minnesota was repaired and returned to duty, and three years later she participated in the Second Battle of Fort Fisher.
