Union Rear Admiral Hiram Paulding (1797-1878) letter exposing a "traitor" in New York State's government, 3pp. 8vo., "H. Paulding", Navy Yard, New York [Harbor], Aug. 19, 1863, with recipient's excised from the lower margin of the last page, but most likely to William Cullen Bryant as the editor of the New York Evening Post, reading, in part: "…I was informed by an officer of the Navy that a Mr. Alexander Goodwin, now employed in the Adjutant Generals Office, at Albany, called upon his family…his wife being a relative [of mine.] That Mr. Goodwin after enquiring after another relative observed "of course she is Secession." The reply being in the negative Mr. G. remarked "then I will not call upon her." I convey the information in the hope that the 'Evening Post' will expose the fact , that Governor Seymour of New York has on the Adjutant Generals office…an acknowledged Secessionist & therefore a man hostile to the government of the United States-a traitor & a Rebel in a place of public confidence where he may betray the best interests of the country. If any further information is desired I will make enquiry of my friend- Very truly yours, H. Paulding." Mounted on autograph album page and can easily be removed if desired. Overall near fine
