ELLIOTT, Washington Lafayette (1825-1888) was a Brigadier General in the Union Army during the American Civil War. He led a division of IV Corps at the Battle of Nashville in 1864. In 1866, he was awarded the honorary grade of brevet major general, U.S. Army. War-date Letter Signed “W.L. Elliott” as Brigadier General and Chief of Cavalry, 1pp. quarto, on field printed letterhead “Head-Quarters Cheif Of Cavalry, Department of the Cumberland” Marietta and Dallas Road, October 4, 1864, and reads in part: “...I have prisoners from Stewart’s Corps caputred yesterday, the Corps is now supposed to be the one on the Railroad above. I have prisoner’s from Lee’s Corps taken today. Lee is now camped on the Dallas Road and three miles off these prisoners day Hardee’s Corps in in their rear...Please communicate this to Genl Sherman. I have done so to General Stanley...” Missing bottom right corner, else very good condition.
