A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Private Henry G. Mervine, "Camp of 17th N. Y. Battery," Fairfax C. H., Va., April 22, 1864, in small part: "…the news about poor brother Charles is very sad…I cannot but feel great anxiety & fears for his safety. His wound is in a very dangerous part. Three cases of a similar nature have come under my observation…all of which proved fatal-though one of the men…lingered along…for a number of days. I have heard of but very few instances of recovery where men where shot through the bowels particularly on the field of battle where the sufferer culled not have immediate care & the best surgical attention. In Charles case I doubt not he is in good hands & sincerely hope he may come through all right…a large number of our company propose to go far west & form a settlement, perhaps the govt. will give us land…Henry." The original transmittal cover is included. VG
