War-date Union soldier’s Autograph Letter Signed by Captain Edmund S. Henry, 127th New York Volunteers, 3pp. quarto, on rare “Fort Wagner” letterhead, Morris Island, South Carolina, September 23, 1864, and reads in part: “...We are pretty busy here now working at the guns night & day. The Rebs shell us pretty lively sometimes, but it is seldom they even wound anybody. We have had very few wounded for a long time, notwithstanding they are bursting shell all around us...if I don’t come home a Brigadier General , it will be because merit is not rewarded! There’s modesty for you. It is one of the peculiar effects of Army life to make a man modest and retiring...I come near going to ‘Davy Jones Locker’...on that expedition to the Rebel batteries. I was ashore with my company and directly under one of them called ‘Simkins’...The only company of our Regiment that landed and with another Company to back me up, I could have told a different story as the result. The boys of my company got up and presented to me a complimentary letter which on the whole is very satisfactory...They are a fien crowd and will stick to me now like bricks. I am ready to try it again, and God willing, will lick them the next time...” Fine condition.
