War-date Union soldier's Grant Overland Campaign letter, 2 1/4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Robert Henry Greenfield, Co. I, 1st New York Dragoons, "Camp near Malvern Hill, Va.," May 16, 1864, to his wife, in part: "…we have seen some very hard fighting since I wrote…we have lost 22 out of our company…all in one battle. That includes killed, wounded and prisoners. We are on the south of Richmond on the James River. Where we will go from here I cannot tell…I think we will cross the James River and make a raid through South Carolina…Ren is wounded in his foot slightly. He has gone to the hospital…we passed within three miles of Richmond, burned the railroads and bridges and four trains of cars loaded with rations for Lee's army…we recaptured 3 hundred prisoners and captured several hundred of the Rebel cavalry. We drove them every time we fought them. They cannot stand before our seven shooters…Robert H. Greenfield." VG
