War-date Autograph Letter Signed by Edgar Mantlebert Gregory (1804-1871) brevet major general, WIA at Chancellorsville, as an officer in the 91st Pennsylvania, 2pp. quarto, In camp Appomattox Court House, April 9, 1865, and reads in part: “...went into line of battle expecting a heavy fight...advanced upon the enemy said to be 22,000 in our immediate front. The firing commenced and some shells reached us not causing much loss. We steadily advanced. In about 30 minutes a flag of truce appeared in our front which was received by our division. Immediately all firing ceased. A conference was held and Gen’l Lee surrendered. I called my brigade to attention massed them and requested them to sing old praise God & c which was sung with great intensity...God be praided for His mercy...The Confederacy has given up. The Rebels are shouting for Joy...” Fine condition.
