War-date Union civilian’s Autograph Letter Signed by M. T. Gordon, 4pp. octavo, February 11, 1865, and reads in part: “...What do you think of the peace men or commissioners such as Blair and Seward. I say they ought to be sent within the Rebel lines and compelled to stay there until they are satisfied to let them alone as they as well as all sensible men know that no good can result from such proceedings. I see Senator Foote has returned but refuses to take the oath of allegiance. Such men ought to be made an example of in the hanging line. . The men returning would be a little more pliable. I think Old Abe might be a little more resolute. I suppose we will have to have patience. The Amendment is favorable and colored men are admitted as Judges of the Supreme Court....” Fine condition. Henry Stuart Foote was elected to the First and Second Confederate Congresses. Early in 1865, Foote attempted to cross to Union lines and travel to Washington, D.C., but was arrested by Confederates before he could do so. The Confederate House of Representatives voted on January 24, 1865, to expel him, but the vote failed to garner the necessary two-thirds majority. He resigned from office in 1865 and moved to Washington, where he sought a meeting with President Lincoln but was refused. Given the choice of leaving the United States or being sent back to the Confederacy, Foote fled to Canada and later to London.
