CROWNINSHIELD, Arent Schuyler (1843-1908) was a rear admiral of the United States Navy. He saw combat during the Civil War, and after the war held high commands both afloat and ashore. Autograph Letter Signed, “A. Schuyler Crowninshield” 4pp. octavo, U.S. Steamer Richmond, Lisbon, February 6, 1870, and reads in part: “...Why we remain here is beyond my conception; what good is a ship in Portugal? Whereas in Spain we might be of some little service...Captain Mullany has got his wife onboard. She came out while we were in Barcelona and has attached herself to the ship for the present. It is something I do not believe in, having women onboard a Man of war...Her presence has had a wonderful effect on the old man; he has improved wonderfully, is always pleasant and good natured...” Very good condition.
