A rare ca. 1860's cabinet card of Gettysburg casualty Private John F. Chase (1843-1914) 5th Maine Light Artillery who was "severely" wounded during the battle of Gettysburg on July 3, 1863. Previously, during the battle of Chancellorsville, he "remained with his gun although all others were killed or wounded" and for his tenacity received the medal of honor. An artistic rendition of bullet-riddled Chase is shown with him wearing his Medal of Honor. He holds an American flag over him. "Our Flag" appears over him while he bares his chest to show his multiple Gettysburg wounds. The image, reads, in part: "WHAT IT COST ME And My Comrades." A brief explanation follows, in the image, in part: "This is a picture of Comrade J. F. Chase of the 3rd Maine…Battery who received a medal of honor by an Act of Congress for heroic serves received at the battle of Chancellorsville, May 3d 1863 and who received 18 wounds at the battle of Gettysburg, July 2d 1863. Laid upon the battlefield two days and was taken up for dead. The first words he uttered when he came to were. "Did we win the battle?" He yet lives to tell the story of that wonderful battle and the cost of the flag and its value to the generation to come. P. O. Address. Gettysburg, Pa." Published by W. H. Tipton, Gettysburg, Penn.
