Autograph Letter Signed “Luben B.D.” 4pp. octavo, Washington , March 3, 1861, with great content “...I extend to you to witness the ceremonies of a Presidential inauguration in this city tomorrow....I now take this opportunity to give you a slight idea of our condition here. It is the regret of Hotel keepers that their houses are not made of India rubber that they might be made to expand on such occassions as those of tomorrow...This city is full to over flowing and the cry is ‘still they come’ extra trains are arriving constantly and hungry visages display themselves upon Pennsylvania Avenue to the great horror of those now in office...Our rifle corps were out yeterday to pay our respects to Buchanan the venerable chief stood uncovered before the White House as we passed and as we passed Willard Hotel where Lincoln is. Our band (the Marine band) struck up ‘Dixie’s Land.’...All the companies have orders to be in attendance at their Armory in case of riot to be called out...” Very good condition.
