Mounted albumen, 8” x 10”, by “C.M. Bell, 463 penn Ave., Washington, D.C.”, some spotts, slightly light, still unique photograph. An early pencil statement from the reverse, “Mrs. Surratt’s House on 10th St. Washington DC. The house in which John Wilkes Booth & the rest of the conspiritors met & laid their plans for the assassination of Pres. Lincoln & his cabinet.”The studio was owned by Charles Milton Bell (1848 -1893). The Mary E. Surratt Boarding House in Washington, D.C. was the site of meetings of conspirators to kidnap and subsequently to assassinate U.S. President Abraham Lincoln.[2] It was operated as a boarding house by Mary Surratt from September 1864 to April 1865.
