The gem in this half-year volume of Harper’s New Monthly Magazine is a Frederic S. Remington-illustrated feature story, by Thomas A. Janvier, of “The Mexican Army.” Remington traveled to Mexico on the assignment to paint typical soldiers of various regiments of the Mexican army. The artist spent more than six weeks in Mexico gathering material for a series of stories, including one he hoped to write himself. One of his subjects of interest was Mexican military bands, and the painting accompanying this lot, “Drum Corps,” was completed shortly after his trip. About a year after that Remington again witnessed marching units like this one when he accompanied U. S. Army General Nelson A. Miles to a special military review of Mexican troops. The original oil on panel is housed in the Amon Carter Museum, Fort Worth, Texas. The story contains 14 Remington images. The volume covers July-December 1889, in 969 pages, despite the cover page saying the volume is from June-November. Covers loose, but present, and pages intact and as good as new. Much more content by noted authors and artists.
