Group of United States military leaders letters, includes: WALTERS, Vernon (1917-2002) was a United States Army officer and a diplomat. Most notably, he served from 1972 to 1976 as Deputy Director of Central Intelligence, from 1985 to 1989 as the United States Ambassador to the United Nations and from 1989 to 1991 as Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany during the decisive phase of German Reunification. Walters rose to the rank of lieutenant general in the U.S. Army and is a member of the Military Intelligence Hall of Fame. Typed Letter Signed “V.A. Walters” 1pp. octavo, March 20, 1972, on his promotion to Deputy Director of the CIA, in part: “...It is a really challenging job at a difficult time in the world’s history, and I shall do my best.” Fine condition...plus; ABRAMS, Creighton (1914-1974) was a United States Army general who commanded military operations in the Vietnam War from 1968–72 (which saw U.S. troop strength in South Vietnam fall from a peak of 543,000 to 49,000). He served as Chief of Staff of the United States Army from 1972 until shortly before his death in 1974. In 1980, the U.S. Army named its new main battle tank, the M1 Abrams, after General Abrams. Typed Letter Signed “Creighton W. Abrams” as General, 1pp. quarto, October 26, 1972, sending his autograph. Fine condition...plus; ANDERSON, Earl E. (1919-2015)The youngest active duty Marine ever promoted to the rank of General and the first active duty Marine Naval Aviator to be promoted to a 4-star rank, became Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps on April 1, 1972. During his 35-year Marine career, he has served in combat actions in World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. Typed Letter Signed “E.E. Anderson” 1pp. quarto, March 29, 1972, in part: “...I am very pleased with my good fortune, and am looking forward to the challenges and responsibilities as Assistant Commandant...” Fine condition...plus; LEMNITZER, Lyman L. (1899-1988) was a United States Army general, who served as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 1960 to 1962. He then served as Supreme Allied Commander of NATO from 1963 to 1969. Typed Letter Signed “L.L. Lemnitzer” 1pp. quarto, sending his autograph. Fine condition...plus; CLARK, Mark (1896-1984) was a United States Army officer who saw service during World War I, World War II, and the Korean War. He was the youngest General (four-star general) in the United States Army during World War II. Typed Letter Signed “Mark Clark” 1pp. quarto, January 30, 1973, in part: “...I’m happy to comply with your request and have autographed the Korean Armistice telegram. I flew back home immediately with the Armistice Document and presented it to the President personally.” Fine condition...plus; two other items.
