A complete bound volume of The Daily Cleveland (Ohio) Herald newspaper from January through June, 1858. Near-horseblanket size, this Cuyahoga County publication contains 148 issues and scores of stories about the troubles in Kansas, much of it about the LeCompton Constitution issue. The document permitted slavery, excluded free blacks from living in Kansas, and allowed only male citizens of the United States to vote. Chockful of Ohio and national politics as regards slavery and how to deal with the fugitive slave issue. This is a mere two years before Civil War actually erupts and to read the editorials is not much different than today: how much power the federal government has against the states and how trouble is bound to erupt. Expect coverage from the Col. Cook expedition to Utah, coverage of President Buchanan, Mormonism and lighter topics such as spiritualism, railroad and ship ads, Indian adventures and the like. Unusual number of stories about the Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton duel and aftermath. Of course there are plenty of obituaries, local murders, shooting, poisonings, etc. In original good shape.
