Manuscript Letter Signed by four men addressed “To the Honorable the Senate and Assembly of the State of New York,” 2pp. large folio,, and reads in part: “...The Chamber of Commerce of the City of New York to whom was referred by the Directors of the New York and Erie Rail Road Company their memorial to the Legislature applying for aid from the State, with a view of obtaining from this Chamber an expression of its opinion on the Subject - begs leave to express its full and hearty concurrence in all the views entertained by the company of the vast importance of the great work to the essential and permanent interests both of the city and the state. This Chamber, however, is at the same time, of opinion that a rail road of such extent and importance, requiring so large a sum for its construction, likely to affect during its progress, and certain to influence after its completion so many great and varied interests traversing as it does, in one direction the whole of this great state and forming as it will so important a chain of connection between different states of the extended Union, should not be left to the management of a company, but be executed under the Authority of the State....” Much more.
