“Return of Our Artist with his Summer Sketches” (artist F.S. Church, pictured) is one of many fine illustrations in this lot of 12 Harper’s Weekly issues from mid to late 1873. Topics include Life in China, funeral of Gen. Canby, burial of Capt. Charles Francis Hall of the Polaris Expedition (later determined he died of arsenic poisoning) and engravings of him and his crew, scenes from the Modoc War, the Boston fire, scenes from the Yosemite Valley in California, scenes from Cornell University, speculative art on the Neanderthal Man, sheep-shearing in Australia, regattas and yachting scenes, the shell-mounds of Stone Age Denmark, scenes from the U.S. west of a buffalo bull charging its hunters, many more engravings of scenes from the U.S. and around the world. Also a few Thomas Nast cartoons sprinkled in. Issues complete and authentic, removed from volume, good shape.
