GOUVERNEUR, Samuel (1799-1865) was a lawyer and civil servant who was both nephew and son-in-law to James Monroe, the fifth President of the United States. Gouverneur helped former president Monroe to press his claims to Congress to repay mounting debts.Autograph Letter Signed “Saml L Gouverneur” 1pp. quarto, December 25, 1822, New York, with integral address to Richard Smtih, U.S Branch Bank, and reads in part: “...In my absence from Washington you will oblige me by executing the requisite signatures to the notes of Mr. Monroe, as they may require to be received, and I hereby acknowledge myself bound by such your acts done in virtue of this letter...” Very good condition.
