A nice early Virginia freedom court document, 1p. 8vo., Southampton Co., Virginia, Feb. 20, 1832, being "Registered No. 1972", reading, in part: "Jarrel Byrd [is] a free man of yellow complexion about twenty eight years of age, five feet eight and a half inches high is blind in the right eye and has a scar on the right wrist was born free in this county and has been duly Registered in my office this 17 day of February 1832. James Rochelle C. C. [Court Clerk]…" Signed and made official by James Clayton with embossed Southampton County court seal at lower left margin. Also included is a photocopy of an emancipation document for his wife Chloe Matilda Byrd who was emancipated by James Jackson in 1818. Records show that over the years the married couple gave birth to seven children all of whom would be considered free. At the time this document was filed Chloe was pregnant with their second child, John R. Byrd. A document that is certainly worthy of further research. Weak at the folds, else expected wear from being carried.
