A curious pre-war State of Alabama slave related court document accusing a certain Charles Spiers of "trading with slave," 1 p. oblong 4to., partly-printed, June 7, 1860, issued by the clerk of Lawrence Co., Alabama. Spiars is accused of "trading with slave" in September 1859. This document authorizes local sheriffs to "commit" Spiars to jail if he fails to post bail in order to answer for this unusual crime. Docketing on the verso, reads, in part: "…not found, Sept. 20, 60. H A. McGhee [?] by John Wade his special dep'ty." Worthy of further research for what he actually traded for to a slave. Minor toning, else VG
