A rare war-date Southern slave hire for the year 1864. On demand, Col. E. E. H. Blick of Brunswick Co, Virginia was to be aid 200.00 for the hire of his slave, "Ephraim" to the Short family of Petersburg. The document, accomplished in manuscript, Dec. 28, 1863, [n. p., but near Petersburg, Va.], reads, in part: "On demand the 25th day of Decbr. 1864 we owe, promise…to pay to E. H. H. Blick the sum of two hundred dollars for the hire of a negro man named Ephraim for the year 1864. The said negro to be furnished two suits of clothes, hat, blankets and a pair of shoes and returned on the 25th Dec. 1864…this the 28th day of Decbr. 1863." Signed and seal by Harriet A. and Cincinnatus Short. On the verso of the document is indicated that Ephraim left his service on May 15, 1864, during Grant's major drive on Richmond. Southern slave hires, especially from Virginia, were rare this late in the war. Documents such as these are unusual and not commonly found available in the marketplace. Folds, else VG
