Early Virginia Slave owner's letter, 1 1/2pp. folio, written by Madison C. Porter, Springfield, Campbell Co., Va., Jan. 20, 1839 to his sister, Mrs. Willis P. Ingraham of Louisburg, North Carolina, reading, in part: "…I suppose that you have heard of the death of our Brother. It was published in the Lynchburg, Virginian for the purpose of you and others to hear of it. He was accidentally shot by a young man living with him. There had been some unknown persons throwing stones about the premises for several knights…he ordered Pendleton to take out the gunned shoot in direction from whence the stones come. He obeyed…the night being dark a stone fell, Pendleton wheeling about shot in the direction, the whole load entering his left breast opposite his heart. He died without uttering but one distinct word. That was "why did you shoot me" and immediately expired…there was a young man standing by him with his right hand on his shoulder when the load entered his left breast. The transaction took place the 20th of Sept…I administrated on the estate of my brother…you have one fourth of 185 acres of land, also of what money is left…paying [off] the debts…we have sold our interest in boy Reauben. You also have an interest in him. We got at the rate of seven hundred dollars for him making your part 175. If you will send me a power of attorney I will collect it for you.
