War-date Confederate Autograph Letter Signed, 2pp. folio, Louisiana, Missouri, November 19, 1862, and reads in part: “...The gloom that hangs over our country and particularly our state is such that I cannot have any but gloomy feelings. Some four months ago I could see a prospect of better times, but this last flare up has entirely driven every prospect from any state which had become almost ruined. The last finishing touch is the Emancipation question. The Lincoln minions have set about trying to ruin this state in order to carry out that doctrine. Lincoln had become satisfied that it would be impossible to conquer the south and he brought up senator and got him to use all his influence in order to get this State to adopt or accept his Emancipation offer in order to get the slaves out of this state before the south was acknowledged. And our senator has worked in earnest, inviting speakers from other states here to pursuade the citizens of this state that they would lose all their niggers any have and they had best sell out and save what they could. There was a good many in this county that became affected with a disease that is very prevelant in the free state, that is the Nigger on the Brain. But not so fatal but what there is a prospect of their recovery...” Very good condition.
