Pair of unusual war-date Autograph Letters Signed pertaining to a slave hire, includes: Autograph Letter Signed “Wm. H. Bell” 1pp. oblong octavo, addressed to Mr. A.S. Lara, of Goshen, Virginia, and reads in part: “...Attached you will find note for hire of Francis...She is a well disposed girl & I believe honest. But I hope you make her know her place, & particularly, guard against her having a white child, as much as in your power. I always did despise a white Negro...” Fine condition...plus; ALS by William Bell, 1pp. octavo, January 2, 1862, and reads in part: “...I wish you would meet me in Lexington...with Francis’ things she left at your house (& she ought to have brought with her)...I dislike very much to be compelled to complain, but the girl is not sufficiently clothed. She has no linsey dress & no blanket furnished, both of which are common & specified in your Bond...” Fine condition.
