A good war-date Confederate soldier's letter, 2pp. 4to., written by Pvt. J. N. Nash, [WIA Gettysburg, Pa., July 1, 1863, left arm amputated], Co. A, 38th Georgia (McCullough Rifles), Stone Mountain, Ga., Dec. 19, 1863 addressed to his commander and friends in the 38th. To his commander Capt. George R. Wells [WIA 2nd Bull Run, Va. 8/28/62 & POW Fisher's Hill, Va., 9/22/64, in part: …I hope when this comes to hand it…finds you and all of the company well, but I was very sorry to hear that you had reported me absent without leaf…I am not absent without leaf for I have bin to Atlanta and was examined by a bord and my furlough is extended and now if you report me that away I don't no what to do…you rote to me to not come out there so I think [it] rather stringe…it would be very bad if they was to come after me…I don't want you to think that I think hard of you for I do not, but I want you to have that report fixed…the bord would a discharged me if I would have taken it. You rote to me to join less[?] Corps but I had rather come to you than to be in Atlanta…" To his comrades, Pvt. James Madison Singleton, (1843-1905), Co. D, 38th Georgia Vols., [WIA Cold Harbor, Va., 6/27/62 & WIA Wilderness, Va., 5/5/64] and Pvt. J. F. Coggin, he writes, in part: "…I got a letter from your girth other day. She is well and requested me to send you her best…John is hear…he says if you don't rite to her he will come out there and kill you so I think you had better rite…Mr. Coggin, don't think that I have forgotten you…I have not forgotten any of the company…I don't want you to gorget me. The girls is all rite…J. N. Nash…". VG
