A pathetic Confederate soldier's letter, 4pp. oblong 8vo., Pvt. Willis Virgil Wells, Co. A [Wright's Legion] 38th Georgia Vols., [KIA Fort Stedman, Va., 3/25/65], Stone Mountain, Ga., April 16, 1863 to his brother, 2nd Lieut. George R. Wells [WIA 2nd Bull Run & POW Fisher's Hill, Va., 9/22/64], in part: "…I have lost the best of my appetite and feel very puny…I think I am taking the mumps…I hope the Capt., yourself and the other officers will forgive me if I stay a little over a week from this date. I feel so bad at times…with those pains in the upper part of my lungs and in my side that it seems like it will be the height of folly…to return as long as I could stay away. James Harris has made his arrangements to start back on Tuesday…others of the Regt will start same day and if I am permitted to stay…(12 days longer) I intend to return sick or well…tell the Capt. if he can do without reporting me a little longer I will be veer grateful…I was going to start last Tuesday but I felt so weakly and puny as always do in spring that I thought I would put it off another week…your brother ever, W. V. Wells…". Light soiling, else VG
