Document, 8” x 3”, partially printed “Appomattox Court House, Va., April 10, 1865 ...Paroled Prisoners Pass.” It is issued to “The Bearer I.H. Jones of R. Howitzers Regt. of Hardway’s Battalion, Paroled Prisoner of the Army of Northern Virginia, has permission to go home, and there remain undisturbed.” It is signed by” R, A. Hardaway, Lt. Col. Commanding Battalion.” The bearer is Isaac L. Jones, mustered into VA Hampton Light Artillery on 5/13/186; transferred into VA Williamsburg Light Artillery; transferred into "3rd" Co. VA 3rd Co. Howitzers Light Artillery; Surrendered on 4/9/1865 at Appomattox Court House, VA. Robert Archelaus Hardaway (1829-1899) was an artillery officer in the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia during the War. Hardaway’s gunners served under Gordon in the Appomattox Campaign, firing one of the last shots before Lee’s surrender. Hardaway was paroled on May 10, 1865. The parole, like nearly all paroles, has been folded in 1/8 resulting in professional tape repair to reverse, yet very readable on the face. Great character includes a train conducters punch upper center. Also a small wet-stamp on the face, "Office of P.M.C. Ft. Monroe, April 18, 1865" which indicates Jones arrival. On the reverse are two additional transportation stamps.
