War-date Union soldier’s Autograph Letter Signed by E.A. Chap, 4pp. octavo, on illustrated lettersheet, Summerville, Virginia, October 31, 1861, in part: “...Part of our wagons went to Gauley after provisions they found the General fighting and he wanted the wagons to haul. He sent word to our Col. if he wanted any provisions he would have to send another train...We are sure there is fighting going on somewhere for we can hear the cannon. ...a man by the name of Dorsey came into camp one afternoon and said that about 15 miles from here there was 100 cavalrymen he saw them (this was before all our men came) the officers called out all that was able to run...60 of us started and cruised Gauley in our own canoe...laid down in the creek and waited for them to show their cowardly heads...” More. Very good condition.
