Pair of war-date Union officer Documents Signed by William C. Allen, Captain, 11th Massachusetts Infantry, POW at 1st Bull Run and WIA at Chancellorsville, both being returns, date 1861 and 1862, listing the present condition of his unit. Lists many soldiers as deserters and in the hospital. Both fine condition. Captain Allen was an injured prisoner at Sudley Church Field Hospital near Manassas. He was likely one of the men allowed by the Confederates to remain at the hospital to care for the estimated 300 Northern and Southern wounded. On the evening of July 26th, he disguised himself as a private and escaped with two other prisoners, anticipating their transfer the next day to Richmond and Libby Prison.
