War-date Union brevet brigadier general's letter, 3pp., 8vo., written by then 1st Lieut. John Willian, Jr. (1835-1869), Co. D, 6th New Jersey Vols., "Camp Union, [Meridian Hill, Arlington Heights, Va.], Dec. 15, 1861," in part: "…we are encamped on the lower Potomac in General Hooker's division. He is a very fine man and a splendid soldier. He speaks very finely of us. He says our Regt is one of the finest…he has 13 Regts here. This place is the most dismal I ever saw. There is nothing…to see unless we go down to the river & see them fire from the Rebel Batteries. One of our boys brought a shell into camp…weighing 72 lbs. It had been fired from over the river. It did not explode. The promotion I skip of has not taken place yet so we are without [a] major. If anyone in this Regt gets it [Capt.] G[eorge] Wilson will be the man…Isaac Pounts & William Owens were in our camp…they are on their way to Washington but were very suddenly stopped this morning by the battery opposite our camp. They…got a bomb shell on their deck…J. Willian, Jr." VG
