War-date Union soldier Autograph Letter Signed by Corden Stone, 1st D.C. Cavalry, with rare full plate engraving of “Fortress Monroe, Old Point Comfort and Hygeia Hotel, Va.” and “Military Map of Maryland & Virginia” hand tinted, the letter is 3pp. quarto, Camp Scott, June 28, 1861, and reads in part: “...Gen. Scott & the President say that our Regiment is one of the best, if not the best that there is in the field...We have three slaves in our Regiment, two in our Company, who have run away from Secession masters. Here all the work is done by slaves. It is done in a very slovenly manner. If work at the North were done in such a manner, we should not get a living then. This, I suppose, is one of the peculiar blessings of slavery...We have prayer meetings on Sunday & Thursday evenings. One young man thinks that he has found peace in Christ...” Fine condition.
