An unusual instance in which Lincoln's first secretary of war gives a pass to the man who would replace him in several months. A rare war-date "L. S.", 1p. 8vo., "Simon Cameron", as secretary of war, Washington, Aug. 24, 1861, addressed to the provost marshal of Washington, reading, in part: "Mr. Stanton has permission to visit and converse with P. Phillips [a singing evangelist]…at will…". An unusual combination and worthy of further research to see what was the connection between Stanton and Phillips and why he needed a pass to see that man! Minor toning, else VG.
