War-date Union soldier’s Autograph Letter Signed by Halsey Bartlett, 6th Connecticut Infantry, KIA at Bermuda Hundred, 8pp. octavo, on “Warren” and “Ellsworth” patriotic sheet, Port Royal, South Carolina, November 13, 1861, with piece of plantation cotton, it reads in part: “...I was on board the steamship Marion...500 of us soldiers aboard all in a perfect huddle...3 Secesh gunboats commenced firing upon us and we made them turn back...the Wabash and another large man of war boat sailed along...After 5 hours heavy firing from the gunboats...the men of Warsman landed and planted the Stars and Stripes on the soil of South Carolina...There was a fort with 30 mounted guns , 400 stack of arms, 6 houses and a magazine full of powder...There was nearly 200 lives lost on the Southern Army in this battle, and only 20 of our men killed and wounded...Enclosed you will find some cotton which I picked here in the fields...” Fine condition.
