War-date Union soldier’s Autograph Letter Signed by Halsey Bartlett, 6th Connecticut Infantry, KIA at Bermuda Hundred, 4pp. quarto, Hilton Head, South Carolina, January 10, 1862, Sherman’s Division, Camp Wright, and reads in part: “...Hilton Head is an island situated on the Broad River in the state of South Carolina...It has one of the finest harbors in the United States. Its products are cotton...sugar cane, and any quantity of Negroes. There is three forts on this island...There is 8 plantations on this island with an average of about sixty slaves to a plantation. Hilton Head Island was taken from the Secessionists by Northern Troops in the great expedition...There is about four thousand troops on this Island....No troops on any vessel can come through this harbor, for we have a blockade of gunboats and man of war boats...There was a fight in this camp one day this week and two men stabbed...They put the fellow in the Guard Tent...” Fine condition.
