War-date Union brevet brigadier general's battle letter, 1p., [torn from Confederate States accounting document] being an improvised 8vo. size, written by then 1st Lieut. John Willian, Jr. (1835-1869), Co. D, 6th New Jersey Vols., "Battlefield of Williamsburg, [May 5, 1862]," in part: "…you will join with me in saying thank God that I have escaped unhurt. Our Regt fought like tigers 8 hours yesterday. We…suffered very severely. Col. Van Leer was killed, Capt. [George] Wilson is wounded severely, but not dangerous. He is a prisoner. The killed of our company are Sergeant Riley, Wollard, Timothy Cloran, Joseph Parks. We have 12 men wounded. We are now taking up the march…so I must close…John Willian…". Light soiling, else VG
