Union soldier's letter, 2pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Altus H. Jewel [WIA Fredericksburg, Va., May 3, 1863], Co. E, 77th New York Vols., "Camp near Belle Plain Landing, [Va.], Dec. 26, 1862", in part: "…I received those gloves that you sent to me…keep an account of everything…you send to me. That County Bounty that you wrote about…if you haven't learned anything about it yet you can, by seeing him. It is all take about peace here. They were ordered at headquarters not to drill anymore until further orders. The sutlers from Washington offer to bet any sum that Peace will be declared in less than six weeks, but I am afraid that it will not be so…I must tell you what we had for Christmas. It was whiskey. We drew whiskey yesterday morning. Some of the officers got tight & treated some of the privates. so that they were tight too. We draw whiskey all the time for hospital purposes & the officers drink it up. One of the doctors is under arrest for getting drunk …A. H. Jewel…". With fully detailed transcription. VG
