War-date Union soldier Autograph Letter Signed by James Bacon, 13th Mass Vols, Bank’s Division, 1pp. folio, on requisition form, Winchester, Virginia, March 16, 1862, and reads in part: “...we are some ways into Dixie...We did expect some hard fighting, but Jackson did not feel disposed to give us a chance. It was a pretty sight to see Regiments after Regiments deployed as skirmishers marching on to the town. There are some very nice folks here and Union, too, and they are glad to see us. This is the largest place we have been into since we left Philadelphia...We expect to march on to Strausburg, but may stop here some time as this is an important host...” Fine condition.
