Union soldier's letter, 2pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Altus H. Jewel [WIA Fredericksburg, Va., May 3, 1863], Co. E, 77th New York Vols., "Camp near White Plain Virginia, Nov. 7, 1862", in part: "…we are encamped near White Plain in Virginia on the line of railroad from Manassas Junction to Manassas Gap. We have been on the march since last Wednesday…crossed the river on a pontoon bridge that is made of small scows with stringers on and planks on them. Since we crossed the boys…start out with revolvers and shoot hens, hogs, sheep, calves or anything that they can get. Last night…they went out with their guns and [Brig.] General [Francis L.] Vinton [severely WIA Fredericksburg, Va., 12/13/62] caught them and some of them were fined…I saw one going to the General's tent with a sheep on his back [with] two guards…on each side and two more with a hog. They will be more careful after this. They don't care how much they steal if they will be more careful I expect they will be more careful…A. H. Jewel…". With fully detailed transcription.
