War-date Union brevet brigadier general's letter, 2pp., 4to., written by then Capt. John Willian, Jr. (1835-1869), Co. C, 6th New Jersey Vols., "Camp of the 6th Regt. N. J. Vols., near Falmouth, Va., April 23, 1863," in part: "…we are still at the same place though we expected to have been a great deal nearer Richmond…we have been detained by the weather which is very unfavorable for the army movements. Our cavalry left here about 4 days ago under Genl. Stoneman. We are in total ignorance as to where he has gone…we think he is making a circuit round the enemy by the way of Culpeper, Gordonsville & Lynchburg. I hope he may be successful. He is our old Corps commander. I received the cravat & silk…though the provost martial had opened the letter…give me your opinion on the conscription bill. It is looked upon very favorably in the army. We have been engaged this week in forwarding to the War Department the exact number of men required to fill up our companies…J. Willian."
