War-date Union brevet brigadier general's letter, 2pp., 4to., written by Capt. John Willian, Jr. (1835-1869), Co. C, 6th New Jersey Vols., while serving on Brig. General Henry Prince's staff, "Office Asst. Com'y of Musters, 2d Div., 3d Corps, Sept. 6, 1863," in part: "I have not been promoted. I am still in the same grade, but on detached duty…Mary would know one of the members of the staff. He is the Vice President's son [brevet brigadier general] Charles. He is quite a fine young man. He is from Bangor…it is…a difficult matter for brother William to get a few hours leave…the Navy had some of the same difficulties to contend with that we have, that is desertion…we are bringing in deserters every day…you would be surprised what very little sympathy there is shown toward, and you may depend upon it no mercy will be shown in case they are found guilty. There is one in our Regt who…will pay that most severe penalty. There will be a grand review of this Corps tomorrow…your son is mounted with the Genl. [Henry Prince] so I get a sight of it…J. Willian." Minor spotting, else VG
