Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Altus H. Jewel [WIA Fredericksburg, Va., May 3, 1863], Co. E, 77th New York Vols., "Camp near Belle Plain Landing, Va., Jan. 4, 1863", in part: "…we haven't drilled any since we came here, but we have order to drill four hours…it needs as much as…necessary exercise for the boys…there has been a number of deaths lately. Lyman Harris…is dead [died of disease, White Oak Church, 12/31/62.] He had a fever…New Years passed off in a quiet mode. The officers that were left did not have so much whiskey as they did for Christmas. Sam Swetland came here…it looked good to see a Northern man in citizens clothes…he has got a position in Washington taking care of horses…we had a new chaplain come to us…I don't know whether it is an advantage to have a [?] in the army or not for while he is preaching…there is hundreds cursing him because they have to stand and hear him…he causes more to sin than he saves…A. H. Jewel." With fully detailed transcription. VG
