Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Altus H. Jewel [WIA Fredericksburg, Va., May 3, 1863], Co. E, 77th New York Vols., "Camp near Belle Plain Landing, Va., Jan. 10-13, 1863", in part: "…I am…out about a mile and a half from camp lying nerve the picket line as a reserve…we are about two miles from the Rappahannock where we crossed. I heard the rebel drums this morning…[Jan. 11]…Lieut. Carpenter [KIA Spotsylvania] that was 1st Lieutenant of our company has been promoted to captain and our orderly Sergeant Henry Rowland [WIA Wilderness] to 1st Lieutenant…you wanted me to keep out of bad company. That is impossible in this army…I see enough wickedness…to make me sick. It is all cursing and some bad language all the time…I made up my mind to feel myself above that…[Jan. 13]…while we were out on picket there were a girl shot by her brother. She was 22 years old and he was 16th or 17th. There were a provost guard there guarding the man's house and property…he let the boy take the gun and he shot her threw the bowels. Some said he done it accidentally. Some said…a purpose…she was shot in the forenoon and lived till knight…A. H. Jewel." With fully detailed transcription. VG
