Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Altus H. Jewel [WIA Fredericksburg, Va., May 3, 1863], Co. E, 77th New York Vols., "Camp near White Oak Church, Va., Feb. 6, 1863", in part: "…I have had a very bad cold…I got a bottle of Dr. Hine's cough surop…I thought…that Dr, Hine's medicine was the last that I would use, but I was glad to get a bottle of it…I never took anything that is equal to it for a cough. It storms most all of the time…we have been payed off…Colonel French has made arrangements to send it to William Bennet the grocery man at Saratoga Springs…our Sutler is with us now. He will stay as long as the regt has money then he will not be seen until, it is time for pay again. That is the way he works it. He has most everything that we need and don't ask mutch for it…25 cts soda crackers, 25 cts butter crackers the same. Writing paper two sheets for five cts. Navy plug five cts Navy=plug tobacco $1.50 cts per plug. Steel pens three for five cts…Altus H. Jewel." With fully detailed transcription. Light soiling, else VG
